Registering a stillbirth

Losing a baby is devastating, we understand that this is a very difficult time for you and your family. We will ensure that the process of registering the stillbirth is as easy as possible and you get the right support. Find our how to register this information with us here.

A stillborn child is a child born after 24 weeks of pregnancy who did not show any signs of life after being born. If your baby was born before 24 weeks, you cannot register the stillbirth, but you can still arrange a funeral.

Stillbirths should be registered within 42 days of your child being born.

Where to register

If your baby was born in Whiston Hospital, the staff will give you a certificate and explain where to register your baby's stillbirth. This is usually at Knowsley Register Office.

If your baby was born outside of a hospital in Knowsley, you can still register at Knowsley Register Office.

If your baby was born in a different hospital or outside of Knowsley, Knowsley Register Office can take your information but cannot register the stillbirth. They will send the information to the register office in the district where your baby was born, which will issue you with the documents you need to arrange a funeral.

Who can register a stillbirth

  • If the parents were married to each other at the time of conception or stillbirth, either parent can register the stillbirth alone.
  • If the parents were not married to each other and you want the father's details to be entered in the register, both parents must attend the register office to sign the register together.

What to bring

The medical certificate issued by the doctor or midwife present at the time of the stillbirth.

The registration process

The registration process should take about half an hour to complete. If either parent is unable to attend, please contact the register office.
