Tell us once

Tell Us Once is a free service offered by the UK government that allows you to report a death once and tell central and local government services securely and confidentially, without having to inform them individually.

This can be a very helpful service at a difficult time, when you have a lot on your mind.

Some of the services that can be notified include

Your local council 

To update services such as council housing, housing benefit, council tax, blue badges, and the electoral register.

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

To deal with personal tax and update child benefit and tax credits claims (contact HMRC separately for business taxes, such as VAT)

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

To update benefits information, such as for the state pension and Universal Credit.

Passport Office

To cancel a British passport.

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)

To cancel a driving licence and remove registered keeper details (for up to five vehicles)

Public sector or armed forces pension schemes

To update pension records

To use Tell Us Once, you will need to provide some information about the deceased, such as their name, date of birth, and National Insurance number. You can then choose which services you would like to notify.

Tell Us Once will then contact the relevant services on your behalf and let them know about the death. You will be sent a confirmation letter once all of the services have been notified.
